Chickens in East Sussex
I recently went to visit a client in East Sussex. She lives at the edge of a small village overlooking farmland. During our meeting we saw groups of butterflies dancing through the air. I wasn’t quick enough to get a photograph of this.
After we finished our meeting she took me on a tour of her garden. It has been very dry this summer and lots of the plants have finished flowering. There are still buddleias and the Japanese anemones are in full swing and the herbs are going strong so there is plenty of nectar around.
Chickens
They keep chickens, known as ‘The Girls’ and get lots of eggs. I was given some to take home including some white ones. Apparently one of the chickens only lays white eggs, not sure why.
Although you may not think of chickens as garden wildlife there are benefits to keeping them – manure, turning over the soil, eggs and they are good company!
Chicken manure is a great natural fertilizer for the garden. If you don’t have access to your own chickens you can buy pellets to put around your plants but be warned they can be rather smelly!
