New Life – frogspawn is here
The sun was shining this morning and I went for a walk on the common. There’s a pond I’ve been trying to find for ages and this morning I finally found it! It’s in a sheltered dell next to a busy road but you really wouldn’t know it was there.
The conservators have been cutting back some of the trees to make it easier to access and it’s a bit like a dewpond. It’s very ‘natural’ around the edges. Just grass and some damp loving plants.
There was a lot of activity on one side and the water was moving around. On taking a closer look there were at least a dozen frog in a mating frenzy with legs sticking out all over the place. The frogspawn covered an area at least 2 metres wide by about 5 centimetres deep. A very impressive quantity and from the activity that was going on it will get bigger still.
The panorama below shows most of it. I will go back again to see how much more there is in a week or so. I will also take some more photos of the frogs as the ones I have are a bit blurred.
I don’t have any frogspawn in my own pond yet although I have seen one or two frogs recently. For several years I kept a log of when it arrived and it varies greatly between late January and the middle of March.
If you would like to know more about frogs Froglife is a great site to visit.
