Birds in the garden

It’s June and I am lucky to have lots of birds and their young in the garden at the moment. I think there are two families of blue tits and one of starlings. There is a lot of noise!

Surprising the birds seem to like the fat balls and squares rather than anything else. These disappear very quickly. I am still surprised which birds eat them. I saw a female blackbird hanging off the fat balls yesterday.  The sunflower hearts are pretty popular too.

At first I thought that the young starling in this photograph may be injured or abandoned. It has moved everywhere, the top of the steps, in all the flowerbeds and on top of this branch in the photograph. It can moved fast when it wants to but I’ve walked past it on the ground less than a foot away. I think it is just waiting for its parents to feed it.

The bird baths are full a lot of the time. Sometimes with several birds in there at once. They need filling up several times a day at the moment as some of the bigger birds mess in the water.

I’ve put a saucer on a wall near the house and there were two baby blue tits bathing in about 2 centimetres of water. Lovely to watch…

The RSPB have a great blog post with details on how to help wildlife and some of the wildlife you may see in your garden this month.
